I enjoy a portable 80 Gigabytes hard drive. Recently I accidentally erase everything on that rugged drive. Therefore I want to know what is the best software to have to salvage lost data?

I run into the same type of problem, and spent weeks penetrating the web for a freeware/shareware program to restore your health data next to. No luck until I came across the one planned in the interconnect below. It was nominated at the PC magazine website, or one of those... Anyway, I've used it to recover facts from a hard drive that become corrupted, and also from a sd card that I also thought I lost all notes on. I am extremely pleased with this program and it's free!
